He was born Jozef De Veuster in Belgium on January 3, 1840. He grew up in a large family in a village called Tremelo. Though his leaders once worried he lacked enough education, he learned Latin well. He joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. He took the name Damien to honor a saint from the fourth century. Eventually, he traveled to the Kingdom of Hawaii to serve as a missionary.

In Hawaii, many people were suffering from infectious diseases. One such disease was leprosy, which people believed was very contagious. Because of this, the government created a law to quarantine those who were sick. They were sent to live in a remote area on the Molokai peninsula. This place was called Kalaupapa. The people living there had very few resources to help themselves. They needed doctors, food, and new buildings to live safely.

Damien arrived at the settlement in 1873 to help the community. He did much more than just teach the Catholic faith. He worked to build houses, schools, and even a large water reservoir. He helped organize farms and built roads to connect people. He also performed many hard jobs like digging graves and making coffins. Damien wanted to live as an equal with the residents. He ate their food and shared their daily lives to show support.

After eleven years of service, Damien discovered he had contracted leprosy himself. He realized this in 1884 when he could not feel hot water on his skin. Even though he was sick, he did not stop his work. He continued to lead the community and finish his building projects. He even worked with a Japanese doctor named Masanao Goto. Later, other helpers like Saint Marianne Cope arrived to assist with the mission. Damien finally passed away on April 15, 1889.
