He was born as Kauikeaouli on March 17, 1814, at Keauhou Bay. He was the son of King Kamehameha I and Queen Keōpūolani. His life began with a very special story. When he was a baby, people thought he might not live. A prophet named Kapihe prayed over him on a rock. After being sprinkled with water, the baby began to breathe and cry. This rock is still kept as a monument today.

As he grew up, he had to learn how to lead a changing nation. He became the king in 1825 and ruled for 29 years. This was the longest time any king ruled in the Kingdom of Hawaii. During his time, the world was changing quickly. He wanted to use new Western ways to help his people. At the same time, he wanted to keep his nation strong and whole. He had to balance these two very different worlds every day. He worked hard to make sure Hawaii stayed independent.

Kamehameha III helped create the first written laws for his land.

In 1839, he helped make a declaration of human rights. He also signed the Constitution of 1840. This was the first constitution written in the Hawaiian language. These important rules were called the Kumu Kānāwai, or the "foundation of law." They were even printed in a special book with a blue cover. These laws helped create a government with different branches. This made the way the country was run much more organized.

There were many hard times for the people of Hawaii during his reign.

New diseases came to the islands on ships from far away. These sicknesses were very hard on the native people. In 1853, a smallpox epidemic caused many deaths on the island of Oahu. The population of Hawaii also became much smaller during his rule. He also had to deal with leaders from other countries. A British captain once tried to take control of the kingdom. The king spoke to leaders in London to fix this. He eventually won back his country's independence in 1843.

Kamehameha III also changed how land was owned in Hawaii. In 1848, a big change called the Mahele took place. This system divided the land between the king, the nobles, and the common people.
