Because he brought the islands together, people often call him Kamehameha the Great. Today, the state of Hawaii has a statue of him in Washington, D.C. This shows how much people respect his work as a ruler. He changed the way the islands were governed forever.

Kamehameha's life began with many different stories about his family. He was born on the island of Hawaii, likely in a place called Ainakea. Some historians believe he was born around 1736. Others think he was born closer to 1761. There were even rumors that he was the son of a ruler from Maui named Kahekili II.

However, most people agree his father was Keōua. He grew up in the royal court of his uncle, Kalaniʻōpuʻu.

As he grew older, Kamehameha took on very big jobs. After his uncle died in 1782, Kamehameha became a leader. He was given a special religious role as the guardian of a war god named Kūkaʻilimoku.

He was also given control over the Waipiʻo Valley. A famous prophecy said he would be a great unifier. People believed this because he was able to lift a heavy object called the Naha Stone. This helped many chiefs decide to support him.

To unite the islands, Kamehameha had to lead many battles. He worked with a group of five chiefs from the Kona district. He also had a very powerful wife named Kaʻahumanu.

Kamehameha used new tools to help his army win. He worked with traders from Britain and America to get guns. Two men named Isaac Davis and John Young also helped him. They lived in Hawaii and helped him use cannons during battles.

Kamehameha's work changed the map of the Pacific. He fought battles on Maui and on the island of Hawaii. He even faced a leader named Keōua Kuahuula near a volcano. After these many conflicts, Kamehameha became the king of the whole land.

His leadership helped create one single kingdom from many separate islands. His story is a major part of how Hawaii became what it is today.
