history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ancient Hawaii was a time before the Kingdom of Hawaii was formed in 1795. For a long time, people thought travelers arrived between 400 and 1100 CE. However, new studies using radiocarbon dating show a different story.

These studies suggest people arrived much later. They likely settled the islands between 1219 and 1266. This happened in a very short time. This quick movement helps explain why cultures in Eastern Polynesia are so similar.

Settlers lived by using the natural gifts of the islands. They brought plants and animals on their journeys. These were often called "canoe plants." They grew taro, bananas, coconuts, and breadfruit. They also raised pigs, chickens, and dogs.

There were different types of temples for different uses. Some were for farming and others were for war. People also lived in many different kinds of houses. Some houses were for weaving mats from leaves. Others were for storing tools like nets and spears. Some houses were even for specific groups of people. Men and women had separate houses for eating.

Society was divided into different groups or classes. The Alii were the high and lesser chiefs. They were the leaders of the land. They ruled with a special kind of power. Then there were the Kahuna, who were the priests. They led religious ceremonies and had many jobs. They could be healers, dancers, or even master boatbuilders. The Makaāinana were the common people. They worked hard as farmers and fishers to support everyone.

Life on the islands was very busy. The islands had many natural resources. This allowed a large number of people to live there. Some estimates say there were between 200,000 and 1,000,000 people. They were very good at managing the water. They built fishponds in streams and estuaries.
