Hawaiian Kingdom

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Hawaiian Kingdom was a country made of many islands. It existed from 1795 until 1893. This kingdom was very important in the Pacific Ocean. It brought many different islands together under one government. Before this, the islands were ruled by separate leaders. These leaders were called aliʻi. They belonged to a special class of people.

Unification happened through many steps over many years. A warrior chief named Kamehameha the Great started a campaign in 1782. He wanted to unite all the islands. He used western weapons and advisors like John Young and Isaac Davis. In 1795, he conquered Oʻahu, Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi. By 1810, the islands of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau joined too. This turned the islands into a constitutional monarchy. This is a way of ruling that uses written laws.

Two main families led the kingdom through its history. The first was the House of Kamehameha. They ruled from 1795 until 1874. After them, the House of Kalākaua took over. They ruled from 1874 until 1893. During the Kamehameha rule, many changes happened. Christian missionaries and whalers arrived in the islands. These visitors brought new diseases like smallpox and measles. Sadly, these diseases caused the Native Hawaiian population to decline quickly.

Political changes became very difficult in the late 1800s. In 1887, a group called the Honolulu Rifles forced King Kalākaua to sign a new law. People called this the "Bayonet Constitution." It took away most of the king's power. It also made it harder for many people to vote. When Queen Liliʻuokalani became queen in 1891, she wanted to fix this. She tried to create a new constitution to restore power to the monarchy.

In 1893, a group called the Committee of Safety overthrew the Queen. This group was mostly made of people from America. They were supported by the U.S. military. This event led to the islands becoming part of the United States. Hawaii became a U.S. territory and later a state in 1959. In 1993, the U.S. Senate passed the Apology Resolution. This acknowledged that the overthrow was wrong. It stated that Native Hawaiians never gave up their right to rule their lands.
