Hawaiian Kingdom

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Long ago, people from Polynesia settled the Hawaiian Islands. For a long time, each island had its own ruler. These rulers were called aliʻi. In 1795, a leader named Kamehameha I began to unite the islands. He used new weapons and advisors to help him. By 1810, all the inhabited islands were part of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Two main families ruled the kingdom. The first was the House of Kamehameha. The second was the House of Kalākaua.

As more travelers arrived from other lands, things began to change. New diseases arrived with them. These diseases caused many Native Hawaiians to die.

In 1887, a group of settlers forced King Kalākaua to sign a new law. This law took away much of his power. When his sister, Queen Liliʻuokalani, became ruler, she tried to change the law back.

In 1893, a group called the Committee of Safety overthrew her. They were supported by the U.S. military.

Soon, the islands became part of the United States. In 1993, the U.S. Senate said the overthrow was wrong.
