Kingdom of Fiji

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, the islands of Fiji were many small groups. In 1871, they became one single state. This was called the Kingdom of Fiji. Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau was the first king. He was a leader from the island of Bau. He ruled most of the eastern islands. Some other chiefs did not want him as king.

A man named John Bates Thurston helped the chiefs. He was a British official. He helped them make a new way to rule. They made a group to help the king. This group was called a cabinet. But the group spent too much money. The kingdom soon had a lot of debt.

Cakobau asked the British government for help. He wanted to give the islands to Britain. This was called cession. In 1874, Cakobau and other chiefs signed a paper. This paper was the Deed of Cession. It made Fiji a colony of Britain. This lasted for a long time. Fiji became fully independent in 1970.
