Hongi Hika was a smart leader. He saw that Europeans had muskets. A musket is a type of gun. He wanted these guns for his people. He helped early missionaries stay safe. This helped him trade for tools and guns. He even helped people write the Māori language. This was a big step for his culture.

In 1820, Hongi Hika traveled to England. He met King George IV. The King gave him a suit of armor. Hongi used this armor in battle. It helped keep him safe from harm.

He led many wars called the Musket Wars. These wars changed much of the land. His actions led to big changes in how people lived. Later, the British came to New Zealand. They made a treaty with many tribes. This happened partly because of the wars Hongi led. He died in 1828 after being shot in the chest.
