Between 1806 and 1845, Māori people in New Zealand fought many battles. These are called the Musket Wars. They began when Māori groups got muskets from traders. A musket is a type of early gun.

At first, Māori used tools made of wood and stone. But muskets changed everything. A chief named Hongi Hika used many guns to lead raids. This started an arms race. Other groups had to get guns to defend themselves. This led to a long cycle of fighting.

Potatoes also played a big part in these wars. Some people call them the "Potato Wars." Potatoes were easy to grow and store. They provided food for warriors on long trips. People used captives to grow these crops. This helped groups trade for more weapons.

The wars were very hard on the people. Between 20,000 and 40,000 people died. Many others were taken as slaves. These fights changed tribal lands and boundaries. They also changed how Māori built forts called pā. These new forts helped them in later wars.
