He was born around 1832. As a young man, he was known for causing trouble. He was even sent to a mission school. Later, he was accused of spying. Because of this, he was sent to the Chatham Islands. He was kept there as a prisoner. He was never given a trial.

While on the islands, Te Kooti had visions. He became a religious leader. He started a faith called Ringatū. This name means "upraised hand." Many people still follow this faith today.

In 1868, Te Kooti led a big escape. He and 168 others took a ship called the Rifleman. They sailed back to the North Island. This led to a period of fighting called Te Kooti's War.

Te Kooti later received a pardon from the government. He spent his later years spreading messages of peace. He also worked to get land back for his people. He lived until 1893.
