Kingdom of Fiji

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Kingdom of Fiji was a short-lived monarchy. It was the first unified state in Fiji. It lasted from 1871 to 1874. This kingdom covered almost all the modern islands. The only place it did not include was Rotuma. It was a very important time for the people.

The kingdom used a special way to rule. It was a constitutional monarchy. This means the King shared power with others. A cabinet and a legislature held the real power. These groups were mostly made of Australian settlers. The Legislative Assembly met in Levuka for the first time. This happened in November 1871.

Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau was the King. He was also the Vunivalu of Bau. Vunivalu means a warlord or a paramount chief. His father was named Tanoa Visawaqa. Tanoa had conquered the Burebasaga Confederacy. However, he never subdued western Fiji. Cakobau ruled most of the eastern islands.

Things became hard for the new kingdom. The government spent too much money. This led to a huge debt. There was also social and economic unrest. In 1872, Cakobau asked the British for help. He offered to cede the islands to Britain. Two British commissioners came to investigate. This was a hard time for Cakobau and Maʻafu.

On March 21, 1874, Cakobau made a final offer. The British accepted his offer. Sir Hercules Robinson arrived on the HMS Dido. He gave the King a 21-gun salute. On October 10, 1874, leaders signed the Deed of Cession. This made Fiji a British colony. This lasted until October 10, 1970. Then, Fiji became a fully independent nation.
