Kingdom of Tahiti

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Kingdom of Tahiti was a strong Polynesian monarchy in Oceania. It was founded by a leader named Pōmare I. He worked to unite many different islands into one nation. These islands included Tahiti, Moʻorea, Tetiʻaroa, and Mehetia. Later, the kingdom grew even larger. It added the Tuamotus and the Austral Islands to its lands. This kingdom was one of many independent states in the region. It stood alongside places like Hawaiʻi, Samoa, and Tonga during the 1800s.

Building the kingdom took many steps and many years. Pōmare I used help from British traders and missionaries. He also used European weapons to win battles against rivals. These tools helped him bring the different chiefdoms together. After him, his son Pōmare II became the second king. Pōmare II faced many hard times and wars. He had to flee to the island of Moʻorea for a while. However, he returned and won the Battle of Te Feipī in 1815. This victory made him the undisputed king of the islands.

Life on the islands changed a lot during the rule of Pōmare II. He was baptized into the Christian faith in 1819. This change brought new ways of living to Tahiti. Missionaries from the London Missionary Society helped the people learn to read. They also helped set up a sugar refinery and a textile factory. In 1817, the islands got their very first printing press. By 1819, people began planting crops like cotton, sugar, and coffee. The king even created the first written laws in September 1819.

Queen Pōmare IV was a very important leader for the kingdom. She became queen in 1827 when she was only 14 years old. She ruled for a very long time, until 1877. During her reign, she even invited the Pitcairn Islanders to live in Tahiti. She was also a famous host to travelers like Charles Darwin. However, her time as ruler was also marked by big changes. A French officer named Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars arrived in 1842. He convinced the queen to let France become a protector of Tahiti. This led to a war between the Tahitians and the French from 1843 to 1847.

The era of the Tahitian kings came to an end soon after. Pōmare V became the king in 1877 after his mother died. He was the last monarch of the Pōmare dynasty. In 1880, he was convinced to give his power to France. This turned Tahiti into a colony of the French nation. Because of this, the monarchy was abolished shortly after. Even though the kings no longer rule, people still remember their history. The royal family left behind a lasting story of a unified island nation.
