The Franco-Hova Wars were two military conflicts in Madagascar. These wars happened between 1883 and 1896. During this time, France wanted to control the island. At that time, the Merina Kingdom ruled Madagascar. The island was very important for sea travel to India. The Merina people worked hard to stay independent. They had a strong military and a good government. The island's size and many different types of land helped them. Tropical diseases also made it hard for Europeans to stay there.

Problems began with a land deal called the Lambert Charter. A Frenchman named Joseph Lambert lived at the royal court. King Radama II had given him large areas of land. Later, the Merina leaders said this deal was not valid. They said the land belonged to the crown, not a prince. The heirs of Joseph Lambert asked France to help them. They wanted their land and property back. France used this legal claim as a reason to invade. This led to the first war in 1883.

The first war ended with the Treaty of Tamatave in 1886. Madagascar had to give the town of Antsiranana to France. They also had to pay 10 million francs. This treaty gave France control over foreign policy. This meant France could decide how Madagascar talked to other lands. However, Madagascar was not yet a full French colony. The situation changed again in the 1890s. The British recognized a French Protectorate over the island in 1890. This changed how different nations viewed the area.

A second war began in late 1894. French marines took control of the town of Tamatave first. Then, General Duchesne led troops toward the capital, Antananarivo. The march was very hard for the French soldiers. They had to move through thick jungles and shallow rivers. Many soldiers also suffered from diseases like malaria. The French finally reached the capital in September 1895. They used shells to attack the main government buildings. Queen Ranavalona III signed a treaty that made Madagascar a full Protectorate.

French rule did not go smoothly for the people. A group called the Menalamba led a rebellion against French rule. They also rejected the influence of Europeans. General Gallieni eventually put down this uprising. In 1897, the French ended the 103-year-old Merina monarchy. They sent Queen Ranavalona III away to live in other places. She died in Algeria in 1917 and never returned home. This period changed the history of Madagascar forever. It moved the island from a kingdom to a French colony.
