Madagascar is a large island in Africa. For many years, France ruled the island as a colony.

Before this, the Kingdom of Imerina held much of the land. A king named Radama I expanded the kingdom in the 1820s. Later, France used military force to take control in 1895. This caused many people to feel unhappy with French rule. Some people even fought back in earlier rebellions. Over time, many Malagasy people wanted their own country again.

In the 1940s, things became more tense. Many Malagasy people had to work on French plantations. They also had to give large amounts of rice to the government. Some men were even forced to join the French army.

Three leaders named Joseph Raseta, Joseph Ravoahangy, and Jacques Rabemananjara tried a different way. They formed a political party called the MDRM. They wanted to use laws to gain independence. They even became deputies in the French National Assembly in 1946. However, the French government rejected their request for independence.

This rejection led to a sudden uprising in 1947. On March 29, many nationalist groups launched surprise attacks. These groups included secret societies named Panama and Jiny.

The rebels were not very well armed. Most fighters used spears instead of guns. They only had a few rifles and three machine guns. They attacked military bases and plantations near Moramanga and Manakara. The movement spread quickly to the south and the capital, Antananarivo. Some people think the rebels attacked because of false information.

The French government responded with great force. They sent 18,000 troops to the island to stop the rebellion.

The conflict was very violent and caused much suffering. The French used harsh tactics to try to stop the movement. Many villages were burned, and many people were killed. The number of Malagasy people who died is hard to know. Some estimates say 11,000 died, while others say over 100,000 died. By August 1948, most nationalist leaders were caught or killed. The last fighting ended in February 1949.

The uprising changed Madagascar forever. It left deep scars on the people and the land. Many leaders were lost, which made it hard to run the country later. Madagascar finally gained its independence from France in 1960.

Today, the people of Madagascar remember this time. They have a holiday every year on March 29. There is also a museum in Moramanga to honor the history. In 2005, the French president called the events of the uprising "unacceptable."
