The history of this place is very important for understanding North Africa today. It shows how different groups of people lived together and fought for control. Many people moved there from Europe during this time. They were often called colons or settlers.

The story of the French arrival started with a conflict in Algiers. In 1827, a leader in Algiers struck a French official with a fly whisk. This event was called the Fly Whisk Incident.

France used this as a reason to start a military action. In 1830, Admiral Duperré led a large fleet of 600 ships. They landed at Sidi Ferruch on June 14, 1830. The French troops moved toward the city of Algiers. They took the city on July 5, 1830.

Some scholars call this period a genocide because of the many lives lost. The fighting changed how people lived in the region forever.

Life in Algeria was very different for different people. Most of the people living there were Muslim. However, hundreds of thousands of Europeans moved to live there too. These settlers had more political and economic freedom than the native people.

This lack of freedom made the Muslim population very unhappy. They wanted more autonomy, which means more power to rule themselves. This dissatisfaction grew over many decades. It eventually led to a large war for independence.

The final struggle was known as the Algerian War. It was a hard conflict involving guerrilla warfare. The National Liberation Front fought for the freedom of the land.

The war ended after the Évian Accords were signed in March 1962. In July 1962, a referendum was held for the people to decide. Algeria finally became an independent nation on July 5, 1962. This marked the end of French rule in the territory. It was a huge change for the people of Algeria.
