The Algerian War was a major conflict for independence. It lasted from 1954 to 1962. This war was fought between France and the Algerian National Liberation Front, known as the FLN.

For a long time, France had ruled Algeria as part of its own country. The war changed how many people thought about colonies. It was a very complex struggle that involved many different groups of people.

The FLN used a special way of fighting called guerrilla warfare. They did not try to win a direct battle against the large French army. Instead, they used small groups to carry out sudden attacks. This strategy was meant to make the war too hard for France to continue.

They also used urban terrorism in cities to reach more people. The FLN leaders studied how other leaders, like Mao Zedong, fought for their lands. They wanted to tire out the French government and change their minds.

The fight for control began much earlier than 1954. France first invaded and captured Algiers in June 1830.

Over many years, France expanded its rule into the interior of the land. By 1834, Algeria was a French military colony. Laws like the 1865 Indigenous Code made things difficult for many Algerians. These laws meant that many people did not have the same rights as French citizens. This unfairness helped lead to the desire for independence.

Important events and numbers define this period of history. The war began on 1 November 1954, a day called Toussaint Rouge.

The conflict caused many deaths, including up to 1.5 million Algerians. It also caused the deaths of 25,600 French soldiers and 6,000 Europeans. In 1962, the Évian Accords were signed to end the fighting.

In a vote in Algeria, 99.72% of people voted for independence. This huge number showed how much they wanted to be free.

This war changed the lives of millions of people forever. When independence came, many Europeans living in Algeria fled to France. These people were called Pieds-noirs.

About 900,000 of them moved to France in just a few months. Other groups, like the Harkis, also faced very hard times. The Harkis were Algerians who had served with the French army. About 90,000 of them eventually managed to find safety in France. Today, their descendants are a large part of the population in France.
