This meeting was called the Geneva Conference. Its goal was to find peace after two big wars. One war was happening in Korea. The other was in a place called Indochina. Indochina included the lands of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The leaders met at the Palace of Nations starting on April 26, 1954. They wanted to settle many difficult questions about these regions.

The conference worked by having different groups talk about their problems. First, they tried to talk about the war in Korea. Diplomats from South Korea, North Korea, China, the Soviet Union, and the United States all met. They discussed moving foreign troops out of Korea. However, they could not agree on a single plan for Korea. This part of the meeting did not lead to any new rules. After that, the leaders moved on to discuss Indochina.

To understand Indochina, we must look at the years before 1954. After World War II, France tried to take control of Indochina again. This led to a long war between the French and the Viet Minh. The Viet Minh were a group led by communists. The fighting became very serious and involved many other countries. In early 1954, the French suffered a big defeat at Dien Bien Phu. This defeat made the leaders realize they needed to talk.

Many different nations joined the talks about Indochina. Representatives came from France, China, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom. The United States also took part in the discussions. Other groups included the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the State of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

One leader for China was named Zhou Enlai. For the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the leader was Pham Van Dong. The United States and the State of Vietnam did not agree to the final split of Vietnam.

The conference ended with the Geneva Accords. These rules helped stop the fighting in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Vietnam was divided into two parts at the 17th parallel. This was meant to be a temporary split. The plan said that national elections should happen in 1956 to join the country.

Sadly, the peace did not last forever. Relations between different sides grew worse over time. This eventually led to the Vietnam War.
