During his childhood, France ruled the land of Algeria. Ben Bella went to school in Maghnia and Tlemcen. In school, he noticed that people were treated differently based on their race. He saw that his teachers had unfair views against Muslims. This made him want to fight for his people's rights. He joined a movement to help change how Algeria was ruled.

Before he was a political leader, Ben Bella was a soldier. He joined the French Army in 1936 to find better opportunities. He was also a talented soccer player. In 1940, he played for Olympique de Marseille. He even scored a goal in a game against FC Antibes.

Ben Bella later helped lead the fight for Algerian independence. He was part of a group called the National Liberation Front, or the FLN.

In 1950, he was sent to jail for eight years. He escaped from prison in 1952 by using a knife. He cut through the bars of his window to get free.

Algeria finally gained its independence from France in 1962. Ben Bella became a very popular leader during this time.
