François Tombalbaye was a very important leader in the history of Chad. He served as the first president of the country after it gained independence.

His life changed many things for the people living in Chad. He was born on June 15, 1918, in a village called Bessada. This village was in the southern part of the French colony of Chad. His father was a well-known trader in that area. Tombalbaye belonged to the Sara ethnic group, which is a large group in the south.

Before he became a leader, Tombalbaye worked as a teacher. He studied in a school run by missionaries in Sarh. Later, he went to secondary school in Brazzaville to continue his learning. During World War II, he fought for Free France against the Nazi-backed Vichy regime. He joined a political group called the Chadian Progressive Party in 1946. This group helped him start his career in politics. He eventually won a seat in the colonial assembly in 1952.

Tombalbaye took charge of the country when it became independent on August 11, 1960.

He wanted to have a lot of control over how the nation worked. In 1962, he made his own party the only legal one allowed. He also started a program called Africanization to change the country's culture. This program caused many disagreements between people in the north and the south. The north was mostly Muslim, while the south had many Christians and animists. Because of these divides, a civil war began in 1965.

During the 1970s, Tombalbaye made even more big changes to the country. He started a new party called the MNRCS and changed his name to N'Garta Tombalbaye. He also required people in the government and military to take part in rituals called yondo. These rites were part of the culture of his own Sara people. However, these rituals were very hard and foreign to many other groups. This made his support in the south start to fade away. He also faced many problems from a group of rebels called FROLINAT.

In the end, the many troubles in Chad led to a sudden change in leadership. On April 13, 1975, members of the Chadian military carried out a coup. This means they took power away from the president very quickly. Tombalbaye was shot in his own palace and died shortly after. His body was buried in a place called Faya. A general named Félix Malloum became the new leader of the country. His time as president changed the way Chad grew as a nation.
