He was born on October 14, 1946, in the country of Gabon. He belonged to the Gbaya people. Bozizé spent much of his early life in the military. He studied at a training college in the province of Bouar. He became a second lieutenant in 1969 and a captain in 1975. Later, he was named a Brigadier General by the leader Bokassa I. This was after Bozizé defended the honor of the Emperor.

His career involved many different roles in government. After Bokassa was removed from power, Bozizé served as Minister of Defense from 1979 to 1981. He then became the Minister of Information from 1981 to 1982. In 1982, he tried to lead a coup against President André Kolingba. A coup is an attempt to change a government by force. This attempt failed, and he had to flee the country. He later lived in Benin for many years. While there, he became a follower of the Celestial Church of Christ.

Bozizé eventually returned to a position of power in the military. He served as the Army Chief of Staff under President Ange-Félix Patassé. For a long time, he helped Patassé stop revolts in the army. However, their relationship changed in late 2001. After his loyalty was questioned, Bozizé was dismissed from his job. He started a rebellion against the government in 2001. This led to fighting between his forces and the government.

In March 2003, Bozizé successfully took control of the capital city, Bangui. His forces entered the city while Patassé was away in Niger. Bozizé then became the president of the nation. He won a big election in 2005 with 64.6% of the vote. He was also re-elected in January 2011 during the first round of voting. During his time as leader, he also served as the Minister of National Defense. He worked to rebuild the country after his rise to power.

His time as president ended because of new conflicts. In December 2012, rebel forces began an uprising against his government. These rebels said the government did not follow peace agreements. In March 2013, rebels attacked the presidential palace in Bangui. Bozizé had to flee the country to Cameroon.
