He was born in a small village called Bouchia. His parents were Joseph Iniabodé and Marie Okolania. Dacko grew up in a region that was then part of a French territory. He went to school in Mbaïki and Bambari. Later, he studied at the Ecole normale of Mouyoundzi. He worked hard to become a teacher. In 1951, he became a schoolmaster in the capital city, Bangui. This early life helped prepare him for his future work.

His path into politics started in 1957. He won a seat in the Territorial Assembly of Ubangi-Shari. A leader named Barthélémy Boganda helped him. Boganda made Dacko the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Water and Forests. After Boganda died in a plane crash in 1959, Dacko became president. He was elected with 39 votes in the Assembly. In 1960, his country became independent. He then served as the very first President of the Central African Republic.

As president, Dacko made big changes for his people. He wanted to help the country grow its own wealth. He changed the rules about mining diamonds. Before this, only a few big companies could dig for them. Dacko said any Central African could dig for diamonds. He even helped build a diamond-cutting factory in Bangui. Diamonds became a very important way for the country to make money.

However, some things became difficult for the government to manage.

Life in politics was not always easy for Dacko. In 1965, a man named Jean-Bédel Bokassa took power in a coup. A coup is when a leader is removed by force. Dacko was held under house arrest for a while. Later, French soldiers helped bring Dacko back to power in 1979.

David Dacko lived a very long and busy life. He was married twice during his life. His second wife was named Brigette Teya. They had seven sons and four daughters together. Dacko was a man who never gave up on his country. He died in November 2003 while seeking medical help. The government held a month of mourning to honor him. He remains a major figure in the history of his nation.
