He was born in a village called Kuma-Dizi. His family belonged to the Yombe people. His father was a successful farmer and trader. There is a story that his name came from a special test. His father took a test using a kasa tree to show he was honest. Kasa-Vubu grew up to be a very hard worker. He studied at many different schools and even tried to become a priest.

Before he was president, Kasa-Vubu had many different jobs. He worked as a bookkeeper for a mission. Later, he became a sixth-grade teacher. He even worked as a chief clerk for the Belgian government. This was the highest job a Congolese person could have under Belgian rule. In 1954, he became the leader of a group called ABAKO. This group wanted the Congo to be independent from Belgium. He even served as a mayor in the city of Léopoldville.

In 1960, the Congo finally became an independent country. Kasa-Vubu was elected as the very first president. He worked with a man named Patrice Lumumba. Lumumba was the prime minister of the new nation. They formed a team to help the country start. However, the two leaders had very different ideas. Kasa-Vubu wanted more power for local regions. Lumumba wanted a strong central government for everyone. This caused a big disagreement between them.

Life in the new country was very difficult at first. Some parts of the land tried to break away. These were called secessionist movements in Katanga and South Kasai. Kasa-Vubu and Lumumba had a huge fight about the Soviet Union. Kasa-Vubu accused Lumumba of having communist sympathies. He then ordered Lumumba's government to end. This led to a very dark time for the country. Lumumba was eventually captured and killed by separatist forces in 1961.

Kasa-Vubu stayed in power for a few more years. He worked to stop other rebellions like the Simba rebellion. He even hired people called mercenaries to help. But the politics in the Congo stayed very unstable. In November 1965, a man named Joseph-Désiré Mobutu took control. This was a coup, which means he took power by force. Mobutu removed Kasa-Vubu from his presidency. Kasa-Vubu died four years after he lost his job.
