First, he served as a soldier in the army. He worked as the Chief of Staff for the Congolese Army. In 1960, a big crisis broke out in the country. During this time, he helped take control from the elected leaders. In 1965, he took power directly through a second coup. He then made himself the only leader allowed to rule. He even started a single political party to keep his control.

Mobutu was born in 1930 in a place called Lisala.

His mother was Marie Madeleine Yemo. She worked as a hotel maid. Mobutu grew up with his uncle and his grandfather. He went to a Catholic boarding school in Coquilhatville. He was a very bright student in his classes. He even ran the newspaper at his school. After school, he joined the army as a punishment for being a rebellious student.

As a leader, Mobutu had many unique ways of ruling.

He started a program called "national authenticity." This was a plan to remove old colonial ways of living. He wanted the country to feel more like itself. People often saw his face everywhere because of a cult of personality. This means people were encouraged to treat him like a hero. He also became very, very wealthy during his time in power. Some estimates say he had billions of dollars in personal wealth.

Mobutu's rule ended because of many hard problems.

The economy of Zaire became very weak. There was a lot of debt and prices went up too fast. In 1997, rebel forces led by Laurent-Désiré Kabila fought for control. They won and forced Mobutu to leave the country. He went into exile to live in another land. He died in Morocco three months after he lost power. He was suffering from a sickness called prostate cancer at that time.
