He served as the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1965 to 1971. From 1971 to 1997, he ruled as the first and only president of Zaire. This was the name he gave to the country to show its new identity.

His leadership shaped the history of Central Africa for over three decades. He was a central figure in the complex politics of the Cold War era. His rise to power changed the political landscape of the region forever.

Mobutu's path to leadership began with his military service. He was born in 1930 in Lisala, which was then part of the Belgian Congo. After a rebellious school years, he was ordered to serve seven years in the colonial army.

He rose through the ranks to become the Chief of Staff of the Congolese Army. In 1960, during the Congo Crisis, he helped remove the elected government of Patrice Lumumba. This action was supported by the United States and Belgium. In 1965, Mobutu took power directly through a second coup d'état. This event established his long-term control over the nation.

Once in power, Mobutu used several methods to consolidate his authority. He established the Popular Movement of the Revolution as the only legal political party in 1967. He also implemented a program called "national authenticity." This policy aimed to purge the country of all colonial cultural influences.

He even changed his own name to Mobutu Sese Seko in 1972. To maintain his rule, he created an intensely totalitarian regime. This meant the state held total control over almost every aspect of public and private life.

Mobutu's political ideology was unique in its description. He claimed his views were neither left, nor right, nor even center. However, he was most recognized for his strong opposition to communism in the region.

This stance earned him significant military, diplomatic, and economic support from the United States, France, and Belgium. He also built close ties with Israel and apartheid South Africa. Because of the Sino-Soviet split, he even established relations with China. These international connections helped him maintain his position for many years.

During his rule, Mobutu became the center of a pervasive cult of personality. This meant his image and name were promoted everywhere to encourage devotion.

His leadership was also defined by extreme economic disparity. While the economy of Zaire suffered from massive currency devaluations and large debt, Mobutu amassed immense personal wealth. Estimates of his fortune range from $50 million to $5 billion. This led many to describe his government as a kleptocracy. A kleptocracy is a government where leaders use their power to steal their country's resources for themselves.

Mobutu's lifestyle was often characterized by great extravagance. He was known for making shopping trips to Paris using the supersonic Concorde aircraft.

Even as the nation faced uncontrolled inflation, he maintained a luxurious existence. By 1990, the economic deterioration and social unrest became too great to ignore. He was forced into a coalition with political opponents and allowed a multiparty system. However, these changes were short-lived as the country continued to struggle.

In May 1997, Mobutu's long reign finally came to an end. Rebel forces led by Laurent-Désiré Kabila overran the country. This military victory forced Mobutu into exile.

He was already suffering from advanced prostate cancer at the time. He died in Morocco three months after losing his power. His life remains a significant study of how power, wealth, and international politics intersect in a single leader.
