This action was supported by the United States and Belgium. In 1965, Mobutu took power directly through a second coup d'état. This event established his long-term control over the nation.

This stance earned him significant military, diplomatic, and economic support from the United States, France, and Belgium. He also built close ties with Israel and apartheid South Africa. Because of the Sino-Soviet split, he even established relations with China. These international connections helped him maintain his position for many years.

During his rule, Mobutu became the center of a pervasive cult of personality. This meant his image and name were promoted everywhere to encourage devotion.

His leadership was also defined by extreme economic disparity. While the economy of Zaire suffered from massive currency devaluations and large debt, Mobutu amassed immense personal wealth. Estimates of his fortune range from $50 million to $5 billion. This led many to describe his government as a kleptocracy. A kleptocracy is a government where leaders use their power to steal their country's resources for themselves.

Mobutu's lifestyle was often characterized by great extravagance. He was known for making shopping trips to Paris using the supersonic Concorde aircraft.

Even as the nation faced uncontrolled inflation, he maintained a luxurious existence. By 1990, the economic deterioration and social unrest became too great to ignore. He was forced into a coalition with political opponents and allowed a multiparty system. However, these changes were short-lived as the country continued to struggle.

In May 1997, Mobutu's long reign finally came to an end. Rebel forces led by Laurent-Désiré Kabila overran the country. This military victory forced Mobutu into exile. He was already suffering from advanced prostate cancer at the time. He died in Morocco three months after losing his power. His life remains a significant study of how power, wealth, and international politics intersect in a single leader.
