The Congo Crisis was a very difficult time for the Republic of the Congo.

This period of conflict lasted from 1960 to 1965. It happened right after the country became independent from Belgium. The crisis was made of many civil wars and fights for power. It was also part of the Cold War. During that time, the United States and the Soviet Union supported different sides. This made the local problems much larger. Sadly, about 100,000 people died during these years of unrest.

Many different groups wanted to lead the new nation. One large group was the MNC, led by Patrice Lumumba.

Another group was ABAKO, led by Joseph Kasa-Vubu.

These leaders had different ideas about how to run the country. Some wanted to focus on specific ethnic groups. Others wanted a united nation. Because they could not agree, the government became very weak. This disagreement led to a lot of trouble for the people.

Independence arrived on 30 June 1960.

However, the country was not fully ready for it. There were not enough plans for how to manage the land. In the first week of July, the army began to revolt. This was called a mutiny. Fighting also broke out between different groups of people. Some parts of the country tried to break away. Katanga and South Kasai became separate areas with Belgian support.

Things became even more complicated as more people joined the fight. Prime Minister Lumumba asked the Soviet Union for help. This caused a big split in the government. A military leader named Joseph-Désiré Mobutu took part in a coup.

A coup is when the military takes control of the government. Mobutu removed the Soviet advisors and took power for himself. Later, a group called the Simbas rose up in the east. They controlled much land in the Stanleyville area.

They were eventually defeated by government forces and others.

By 1965, the political fighting had not stopped. A second coup by Mobutu happened in November 1965.

This time, he took personal control of the whole country. He turned the Congo into a dictatorship. He later renamed the country Zaire in 1971. Mobutu stayed in power for many years. He ruled until he was removed from power in 1997. The history of the Congo shows how hard it can be to build a new nation. It also shows how big world conflicts can affect local people.
