François Duvalier was a leader who ruled Haiti for many years. He was born in Port-au-Prince in 1907. His father was a teacher and a journalist. Duvalier became a doctor after studying at the University of Haiti. He also went to the University of Michigan to learn about public health. He worked hard to fight diseases like malaria and typhus. Because he helped so many people, his patients called him "Papa Doc."

Duvalier entered politics by helping the government with health services. He worked as a minister under President Dumarsais Estimé. In 1957, Duvalier ran for president against Louis Déjoie. Duvalier promised to help the poor black majority in Haiti. He won the election with 679,884 votes. This was a very big win for him. He wanted to change how the country was run by the small elite.

Once he was president, Duvalier took more and more control. In 1958, there was an attempt to remove him from power. This event made him trust the regular army even less. He created his own special group called the Tonton Macoute. This group was used to find and punish anyone who disagreed with him. The group grew very large and used a lot of the government's money. Many people in Haiti lived in fear because of this group.

Duvalier used many ways to stay in charge. He used ideas from Vodou, a local religion, to make himself seem more powerful. He also changed the laws to make himself president for life in 1964. During this time, he changed the Haitian flag to black and red. He also had a difficult relationship with the United States. The U.S. stopped giving him aid money because of how he ruled. He even claimed that a curse he placed on John F. Kennedy caused the President's death.

Duvalier stayed in power until he died in 1971. After he passed away, his son Jean-Claude became the next president. People often called Jean-Claude "Baby Doc." His time as leader was a very different part of Haitian history. Duvalier's rule changed the way the country worked for a long time. We can see how one person's choices can change a whole nation.
