Micombero took control of the country in steps. First, he helped stop a coup in 1965. This was an attempt by Hutu soldiers to change the government. In July 1966, he became the Prime Minister. He helped a new king named Ntare V take the throne. Then, in November 1966, he led another coup. He removed the king while the king was away. This ended the monarchy in Burundi forever. He then started a new republic with himself as leader.

Micombero's life began in a place called Rutovu. He was born on August 26, 1940. His parents were peasants from the Tutsi ethnic group. He went to Catholic mission schools for his early education. In 1960, he joined the military to train. He traveled to Belgium to study at the Royal Military Academy. By the time Burundi became independent in 1962, he was a captain. He soon became a high leader in the army.

During his rule, Micombero made many big changes. He made the UPRONA party the only legal party. He also took control of all media and government groups. In 1972, a very sad event happened in the country. A rebellion started among the Hutu people in the south. The government responded with extreme violence. This violence was a genocide against the Hutu population. It is believed that around 100,000 people were killed during this time.

Micombero's time in power ended in 1976. Another army officer named Jean-Baptiste Bagaza led a coup. Bagaza took over and became the new president. Micombero had to leave his home country. He went to live in Somalia as an exile. He even earned a degree in economics there in 1982. He died of a heart attack in 1983. His rule left a long history of conflict in Burundi.
