He was a politician and a revolutionary. He helped lead the country toward independence. He also became the first elected President of Rwanda. His work changed how the country was governed. He helped move Rwanda from a monarchy to a republic. This was a major shift for the nation.

Kayibanda's leadership grew from a movement for the Hutu people. At that time, the Tutsi minority held most of the power. Many Hutu people felt this was unfair. Kayibanda started a political party called Parmehutu. He also wrote a famous paper called the "Bahutu Manifesto" in 1957. This group wanted more rights for the Hutu majority. This led to tension and fighting with the UNAR party. The UNAR party wanted to keep the Tutsi monarchy.

Kayibanda's journey began with a long education. He was born on May 1, 1924, in Tare, Rwanda. He went to primary school in Tare and Kabgayi. In 1937, he entered the Saint Léon Minor Seminary of Kabgayi. After that, he studied at the Major Seminary of Nyakibanda. He spent four years studying there. These years of study helped prepare him for his future roles.

Rwanda finally became independent from Belgium on July 1, 1962.

Kayibanda became the president on October 26 of that year. He led the first Rwandan group to the United Nations. By 1965, his party Parmehutu was the only legal party. He was the only person on the ballot in 1965 and 1969. He also made rules that stopped communist activities in the country. He wanted Rwanda to have strong ties with Western nations.

Things changed for Kayibanda in 1973. A man named Juvénal Habyarimana led a military coup. This was a sudden change in government. During this time, about 55 people close to the old government were killed. Kayibanda and his wife, Vérédiana, were taken to a secret location. They were reportedly starved to death while in hiding. Kayibanda died on December 15, 1976. His life remains a big part of Rwanda's history.
