He was born in 1924. He went to school in many places. He even studied at a seminary for many years.

Kayibanda led a movement for the Hutu people. He started a political party called Parmehutu. At that time, the Tutsi minority held the power. Kayibanda wanted the Hutu majority to lead. This caused some fighting between different groups. In 1962, Rwanda became free from Belgium. Kayibanda became the first elected president.

He held power for many years. By 1965, his party was the only legal one. He was the only name on the ballot in 1965 and 1969. He wanted Rwanda to work with Western nations. He also made rules against communism. Some people said he gave too much power to his own region.

In 1973, a man named Juvénal Habyarimana took power. This was a military coup. This change in power was very hard for Kayibanda. He and his wife were held in a secret place. They died there a few years later in 1976.
