He traveled to the United States to learn about history and medicine. He studied at the Wilberforce Institute in Ohio and Indiana University. Later, he went to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He worked hard to earn his medical degree. This training helped him become a doctor. He used his education to help lead his people.

His journey back to Africa was a very big moment.

After living abroad for many years, he returned to Nyasaland in 1958. At that time, the land was still ruled by the British. Banda spoke to crowds about freedom and independence. He joined the Malawi Congress Party to fight for change. He was even arrested and put in prison for a short time. However, he was released and helped lead the country to freedom.

Banda's time as leader had both good and difficult parts.

He worked to improve schools and build new roads. He also supported rights for women in his country. But he also held almost all the power himself. He made Malawi a one-party state where only one group could lead. During this time, many people were treated very unfairly. Some people were jailed or killed because they disagreed with him. Some estimates say as many as 18,000 people died during his rule.

Eventually, many people wanted the country to have more choices.

In 1993, a vote was held to end the one-party system. This was a step toward making the country more democratic. Banda ran in the next election, but he did not win. This marked the end of his long time in power. He died in South Africa in 1997. Today, people remember him as a man who shaped the history of Malawi.
