Banda spent many years working to help others. She started groups like the National Association of Business Women. These groups helped women find work and gain power. President Mutharika passed away in April. Some people tried to stop Banda from becoming the leader. They wanted his brother, Peter Mutharika, to take over instead. This caused a crisis because people were not sure who should lead. However, the law said the vice president must become president. The military supported the law and helped Banda take her place.

Banda led the country until the next election in 2014.
