In 1954, he helped start a political group called TANU. He wanted Tanganyika to be free from British rule. Nyerere was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Because of this, he used non-violent protest to make his point. He led TANU to a big victory in the 1960 election. This led to Tanganyika becoming independent in 1961. He then became the first president of the new republic in 1962.

As a leader, Nyerere had many big goals for his country.

In 1964, Tanganyika joined with Zanzibar to form Tanzania. Nyerere became the president of this new nation. He promoted a philosophy called Ujamaa, which means togetherness. He wanted people to rely on themselves through communal farming. He also expanded healthcare and schooling for many people. His government helped other groups in Africa fight for their own freedom. He even led Tanzania in a war against Uganda in 1978.

Nyerere's time as a leader had both successes and hard parts.
