He was born on December 28, 1925, in a village called Akokoro. His family was part of the Lango ethnic group. Obote went to many different schools to learn. He eventually studied at Makerere University. He wanted to study law at the university. However, the school did not teach law at that time. Instead, he studied subjects like English and geography. He became very good at giving speeches to large groups of people.

Obote spent his early working years in different places. He worked in the Buganda region of southern Uganda. Later, he moved to Kenya to work at a construction firm. While in Kenya, he became part of the movement for independence. In 1956, he joined a political group called the Uganda National Congress. He later helped start a new party called the Uganda People's Congress in 1960. This group helped him become a leader in his country. He worked hard to help Uganda become free from British rule.

Uganda gained its independence in 1962.

Obote became the prime minister through a partnership with another party. Mutesa II, who was the King of Buganda, became the president. This role was mostly ceremonial, meaning it was a symbol of the state. Things changed in 1966 after a disagreement between the leaders. Obote took more power for himself and became the president. He also made his party the only official political party in 1969. This gave him almost total control over the country.

Obote tried to change how the country worked using ideas called socialism. He wanted the government to have more control over businesses. In 1970, the government took a large share of major companies and banks. These changes caused many hard problems for the people of Uganda. There were not enough food supplies for everyone. Many people also faced corruption and high prices for goods. In 1971, a man named Idi Amin led a military coup. This meant the army took over the government by force. Obote had to leave Uganda and live in Tanzania.

Obote spent many years in exile, which means living away from his home. He lived in Tanzania and tried to find ways to return to power. He was eventually elected president again in 1980. However, many people said that this election was not free or fair. His second time leading the country ended in 1985. A man named Tito Okello led another coup to take control. Obote spent the rest of his life living outside of Uganda.
