As a student, Museveni learned a lot about how countries work. He studied economics and political science at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. While he was there, he started a group for student activists. He even traveled to Mozambique to receive military training. In 1970, he joined the intelligence service in Uganda. These years helped him prepare for his later life in politics. He wanted to see big changes for his home country.

His path to power involved many difficult fights. In 1972, he tried to fight against the rule of Idi Amin. This attempt did not work at first. Later, in 1973, he formed a group called the Front for National Salvation. He fought alongside Tanzanian forces during the Tanzania–Uganda War. This war helped remove Amin from power in 1979. After that, Museveni led a group called the National Resistance Army. They fought the Ugandan Bush War to change the government.

On January 30, 1986, Museveni became the president of Uganda. He promised to bring democracy and security to the people. His government worked on a plan called the Ten-point Programme. This plan aimed to fix the economy and stop corruption. He also led Uganda during several other wars in nearby places. Some people say his rule helped the economy grow. However, others say he acts like a dictator.

Museveni has stayed in power through many elections. In 2005, he helped remove the rules about how long a president can serve. In 2017, he also changed the rules about age limits. He won his sixth term in January 2021 with 58.6% of the vote. Some reports say there were problems with how people voted. He has met many world leaders, like US Presidents George W. Bush and Joe Biden. His long leadership continues to be a major part of African history.
