He has been the President of the country since the year 2000. Before he became President, he held other important jobs. He served as the Vice President and the Minister of Defence. He also acted as the main leader of Rwanda between 1994 and 2000. Kagame was a soldier who led a group called the Rwandan Patriotic Front, or RPF. This group was a rebel force that entered Rwanda in 1990. His life has been shaped by many big changes in his home country.

Kagame's journey began in a village called Tambwe in southern Rwanda.

He was born on October 23, 1957, to a Tutsi family. During his childhood, many people in Rwanda faced hard times. Because of these troubles, his family had to leave Rwanda when he was two years old. They moved to a neighbor country called Uganda. Kagame grew up in refugee camps and attended schools there. He learned to speak English and became part of the local culture. These early years helped him prepare for his future role as a soldier.

In the 1980s, Kagame became a very skilled military officer. He fought in the Ugandan Bush War to help Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni eventually became the President of Uganda. Kagame worked in military intelligence, which is a job about gathering secret information. After that, he joined the RPF to help Rwandan refugees return home. In 1990, the RPF began an invasion of Rwanda. During this time, the leader of the RPF, Fred Rwigyema, was killed. Kagame then took control of the group to lead them through the civil war.

History shows that Kagame played a major role during a very dark time. In 1994, a genocide happened in Rwanda.

During this event, between 500,000 and 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu people were killed. The RPF fought in the war and helped to end this violence. After the war, Kagame helped the government stay strong while others rebuilt the nation. He also was involved in wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These conflicts lasted until a peace deal was made in 2003.

Today, people have different views about Kagame's leadership.

He has worked hard to help Rwanda grow in many ways. He started programs to improve healthcare, schools, and the economy. This has changed the way the country looks and works. However, some human rights groups say his rule is too strict. They believe he does not allow enough freedom for political opponents. He has won four presidential elections, but observers say they were not always fair. His work continues to shape the future of East Africa.
