Joseph grew up while his father led a movement against a leader named Mobutu Sese Seko. Because of this, Joseph spent much of his youth in other places. He went to school in Tanzania and studied in Uganda. He attended Makerere University before a war began in 1996. Later, he received military training in China at the PLA National Defense University. He even earned a degree in international studies through distance learning. These years of study helped prepare him for a future in politics and the military.

In 2001, Joseph Kabila became president. This happened ten days after his father was killed. He was only 29 years old at the time. He took over during the Second Congo War. This was a very difficult time for the country. Joseph worked to restart peace talks that had stopped before. These talks helped end the Second Congo War. He is credited with bringing more stability to much of the land.

Kabila led the country for many years through different elections. He won his first election in 2006. This was the first free election in many decades. He was re-elected for a second term in 2011. During his time, the country's economy grew five times larger. He encouraged foreign companies to invest in mining. He also worked to improve infrastructure, like roads and railways.

Even with economic growth, there were many hard problems. Most people in the country still lived in poverty. Many people felt the government was not fair. There were accusations of corruption and unfairness in elections. In 2018, Kabila announced he would step down. This led to a new president, Félix Tshisekedi, taking over in 2019. This was the first peaceful change of power in a long time.
