Joseph Kabila Kabange is a Congolese politician and former military officer. He served as the fourth president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from 2001 to 2019.
Kabila's journey to the presidency began with a complex military and educational background. He was born on June 4, 1971, in the village of Hewa Bora II. His father, Laurent-Désiré Kabila, was a prominent rebel leader who fought to overthrow the dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. Because of his father's political status, Joseph spent much of his youth outside the DRC. He attended school in Tanzania and studied at Makerere University in Uganda. Later, he received advanced military training at the PLA National Defense University in China.
Before becoming president, Kabila held several significant military roles. During the First Congo War in 1996, he served as a commander for the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire (AFDL). This group, backed by Rwanda, successfully overthrew the existing regime. After his father became president, Joseph rose through the ranks of the newly formed Congolese Armed Forces (FAC). He served as the deputy chief of staff and later as the chief of staff of the Land Forces in 2000.
Kabila's presidency began under very sudden and difficult circumstances. In January 2001, ten days after his father was assassinated, Joseph Kabila was named interim president. He was only 29 years old and was considered inexperienced by many. The country was facing economic collapse and the ongoing Second Congo War.
During his two terms, Kabila oversaw significant economic changes. He encouraged foreign companies to invest heavily in the nation's mining industry. This focus on resources helped the country's economy grow by five times during his tenure. He also worked to improve infrastructure, such as roads and railways.
Kabila's later years in power were marked by political tension and criticism. While he won elections in 2006 and 2011, his second term faced many accusations of fraud. His government was frequently criticized for corruption and human rights violations. In 2016 and 2017, the United States and the European Union even placed sanctions on his associates.
In August 2018, Kabila announced he would not seek a third term. This paved the way for the 2018 election and the eventual transition of power. In January 2019, Félix Tshisekedi became the new president.
