He was born on September 13, 1951. He grew up in a Dinka family in the village of Akon. His father, Kuethpiny Thiik Atem, was a cattle herder. His mother, Awiei Rou Wol Tong, worked as a farmer. Kiir was the eighth of nine children in his large family. He grew up in a part of the world facing many changes.

Kiir spent many years as a soldier during long wars. In 1967, he joined a group called the Anyanya rebels. Later, in 1983, he joined the Sudan People's Liberation Army, or SPLA. He worked closely with a leader named John Garang. Kiir helped lead a successful mission called Operation Thunderbolt in 1997. When Garang died in a helicopter crash in 2005, Kiir took over. He became the leader of the SPLA and the President of Southern Sudan.

The people of South Sudan wanted to be their own country. In January 2011, they held a big vote called a referendum. Most people voted to become independent from Sudan. On July 9, 2011, South Sudan finally became a new, independent nation. Salva Kiir became the very first President of this new country. He told the people to forgive the wrongs of the past.

Kiir's time as President has been very difficult. Many people and groups criticize how he leads the country. They say he acts like a dictator and does not allow fair elections. There have been many reports of violence and harm toward people who disagree with him. Some leaders say he takes money that belongs to the country. Human rights groups also say he limits what the news can say.

Even as a leader, Kiir has faced many hard jobs. He has dealt with border wars with Sudan and fights between different groups. There has been much sadness caused by violence between ethnic groups like the Nuer and Murle. He has also made big changes to his government and military. These choices have often led to more arguments and tension. His story shows how hard it is to lead a new nation.
