In 1989, al-Bashir changed the history of his country. He was a brigadier general in the Sudanese Army at that time. He led a group of officers in a military coup. This event removed the elected government led by Sadiq al-Mahdi. Al-Bashir then took control of the government himself. He held many important jobs at once. He was the head of state and the prime minister. He also served as the leader of the armed forces.

During his years in power, there were many difficult struggles. One major conflict was the War in Darfur. This war involved fighting between groups like the Janjaweed militia and rebels. These rebels included the Sudanese Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement. The fighting caused a lot of suffering for many people. Most sources say between 200,000 and 400,000 people died. Many others had to leave their homes to find safety.

Because of the violence in Darfur, international leaders took action. In 2008, a prosecutor named Luis Moreno Ocampo made an accusation. He said al-Bashir was responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. In 2009, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant. Later, in 2010, they added charges of genocide. The Sudanese government did not recognize these warrants. They did not agree with the decisions made by the court.
