The war involved two main sides. One side was the government of Sudan and its military. The government also used a militia group called the Janjaweed. These were fighters recruited from certain Arab groups. The other side was made of rebel groups. These groups included the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement. They fought because they said the government treated non-Arab people unfairly.

This conflict had many different causes. Some people say it started because of disputes over land. Herders and farmers often fought over who could use the land. Access to water was another big problem for these groups. There were also long-standing tensions between different ethnic groups in Sudan. These tensions had been growing for many years before the war began.

The fighting led to terrible results for many civilians. Hundreds of thousands of people died from combat, disease, or starvation. Many people had to leave their homes to stay safe. Millions of people became refugees or moved to camps in places like Chad.

Many groups worked to bring peace to the region. The African Union and the United Nations sent peacekeepers to help. This mission was known as UNAMID. Leaders tried to sign many different agreements over the years. In August 2020, a large peace agreement was finally signed. This agreement was between the Sudanese authorities and several rebel groups. They hoped it would end the fighting for good.
