It covers an area about the size of mainland Spain. The land is mostly a dry, semi-desert plateau. In the middle of this region, the Marrah Mountains rise high into the sky. These are volcanic peaks that reach a high elevation. One special spot is the Deriba Crater.

This area has more rain and permanent springs of water. Scientists even found signs of a huge underground lake deep below the ground. It may have held much more water thousands of years ago.

The geography of Darfur has four main parts. The eastern half has sandy soils and low hills called goz. These hills can have rich land for farming if there is water nearby. To the north, the sandy goz meets the Sahara Desert. Another feature is the wadis. These are paths where water flows during the rainy season. Some large wadis flow hundreds of kilometres west toward Lake Chad.

In the west, the land is mostly hard basement rock. This rock is not good for growing crops, but animals can graze there.

Darfur has a very long and complex history. The region was once an independent sultanate for hundreds of years. Different groups have ruled the land over time. The Daju people created a kingdom in the Marrah Mountains by the 12th century. Later, the Tunjur ruled the area. Then, the Keira dynasty made Darfur a great power in the Sahel.

This dynasty expanded the borders far to the east. In 1874, the independent sultanate fell to a warlord named Rabih az-Zubayr. Later, Anglo-Egyptian forces took control of the region in 1916.

Life in Darfur has become very difficult recently. Since 2003, there has been a major conflict in the region. This conflict involves the government and the local people. It is caused by many things like religious rivalry and fights between farmers and herders. This situation has created a huge humanitarian emergency. Many people have lost their lives or had to leave their homes.

Leaders have worked hard to find ways to bring peace. In 2006, a peace agreement was signed between the government and one rebel group. This deal included ways to share wealth and power. Later, in 2010, more talks took place in a place called Doha. These talks discussed helping victims and creating special courts.

People also talk about the importance of water in the region. Finding ways to help people survive in the dry land is a big goal. Even though things are hard, many groups still work to give aid to the children and families there.
