Abyei is a special area located on the border between Sudan and South Sudan.

It holds a unique status called a condominium. This means it is considered part of both countries at the same time. The main center of the area is Abyei Town. For many years, leaders have worked to decide exactly where the border should be. This is a very important place because of its history and its resources. One major reason for the disagreement is the presence of oil in the region.

Two main groups of people have shared this land for a long time. The Ngok Dinka are permanent residents who live there. They are part of the Dinka people from Southern Sudan. The Messiria are a nomadic Arab group from the north. They move their cattle to the Bahr river basin in Abyei during the dry season.

Because of these different ways of living, the two groups often meet in the area. This can lead to competition over how the land is used.

The history of these borders changed many times in the last century. In 1905, the British moved nine Ngok Dinka chiefdoms into the Kordofan province. They did this to try and manage the groups under one administration. However, the status of the land remained unclear after the British left in 1956. This uncertainty led to many years of conflict and civil wars. During these times, different groups joined different sides of the fighting. These struggles made it very hard for the people living in Abyei to stay in their homes.

In recent years, there have been many attempts to find a peaceful solution. A group called the Abyei Borders Commission was formed to set the boundaries. This group included fifteen people, including experts from the United States and the United Kingdom. They tried to define the area using specific lines of latitude. In 2008, heavy fighting broke out between different groups and soldiers. These clashes caused many deaths and forced about 25,000 people to leave their homes. Some reports said that Abyei Town was almost completely destroyed during this time.

To help stop the violence, the leaders went to an international court. This court is the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. They agreed to let the court redraw the boundaries of the Abyei area. This process was meant to help settle the disputes between the north and the south. Even though a referendum was planned to let the people choose their country, it was never held. Today, the area remains a very important part of the peace process between Sudan and South Sudan.
