Port Sudan is a major port city in eastern Sudan. It sits right on the edge of the Red Sea. This city is the capital of the Red Sea State. It is a very important place for the whole country. In fact, 90% of Sudan's international trade happens here.

Ships carry many goods through this busy port. They bring in heavy machinery, vehicles, and building materials. They also take things like oilseeds, senna, and animal skins away to other lands.

The city works as a giant gateway for goods. It has a modern port made for large containers. A rail link and a tarred road connect the city to Khartoum. There is even an international ferry that travels from Jeddah.

The port is part of a long maritime path called the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. This path runs from the Chinese coast all the way to Europe. This connection helps many different countries trade with one another.

People built Port Sudan a long time ago. It was built between 1905 and 1909. The leaders of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan made it to replace an older port called Suakin. Suakin was a historic Arab port, but it was choked with coral. Later, in 1977, a pipeline was built to move oil from the port to Khartoum.

The city has grown much larger since those early years.

Many interesting facts describe life in Port Sudan. The climate is a hot desert type. This means summers are extremely hot and winters are moderately hot. Most of the rain falls between October and January. Because it is so dry, people get fresh water from Wadi Arba'at in the Red Sea Hills.

The population was about 394,561 people in 2008. Most residents are Sudanese Arabs, including the native Beja people. The city is also home to the Red Sea University, which started in 1994.

Today, Port Sudan plays a very big role in Sudan's history. Because of fighting in the capital city of Khartoum, the government moved there. From April 2023 to January 2026, it acted as a de facto capital. This means it served as the main place for the government to work. The city has also become a refuge for people fleeing war. These people often face extreme heat and find it hard to get food or water.
