It is a very important part of a three-city area. This area includes Khartoum and Omdurman as well.

The city sits in a special spot near two rivers. It is on the north bank of the Blue Nile. It is also on the east bank of the River Nile. These two rivers meet very close to the city. Many bridges help people cross these waters. The Mac Nimir Bridge and Cooper Bridge cross the Blue Nile. The Shambat Bridge used to connect the city to Omdurman. However, that bridge was destroyed in 2023.

Bahri has a very long history. It was once the largest settlement near the rivers. This changed when Egyptians built a military center in the 1820s. The city grew again after 1899 because of a railroad. The Sudan Military Railroad ended right here. This made the city a central spot for trains and yards. A bridge was also built over the Blue Nile in 1910. The city has seen many changes over the years.

Today, Bahri is a major center for industry.

Many people work in factories and workshops here. The city has dockyards for ships and sawmills for wood. Workers make things like cloth, bricks, and food. They also trade in cotton, grain, and fruit. There are even chemical plants that make products for homes. Some parts of the city have wealthy suburbs near the Blue Nile. Many different neighborhoods make up the city area.

Life in the city includes many schools and places to visit. Students can study at the University of Bahri. There is also Mashreq University and Alzaiem Alazhari University. People can find entertainment like the Alsafia Cinema.
