Omdurman has a long and busy history. The city grew quickly after the building of a special tomb. In 1898, a large battle took place near the village of Kerreri.

During this battle, British forces led by General Kitchener defeated the Mahdist forces. Many people were lost during this fight. After the battle, Great Britain and Egypt governed Sudan together until 1956. The city has also seen heavy fighting in 2008 and between 2023 and 2025.

Many people live in Omdurman and use it for learning. There are several public universities like Karary University and Omdurman Islamic University.
