Long ago, the city began as a fortress. This fort was built to protect trade routes to China. A leader named Prince Gagarin helped organize these defenses. He wanted to make the long journey safer for traders. The first fort was built near the river station in 1716. It had wooden barracks and stores for food and powder.

History has brought many changes to Omsk over the years. In 1782, the city was officially granted town status. Later, it became a capital for a large region. During the Russian Civil War, Omsk served as a capital. It even held the imperial gold reserves for a short time. In the 1850s, the famous writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky lived there in prison. The old military fortress was eventually destroyed in 1864.
