The river was very important for trade in the past. It helped people move goods between different lands.

Semey has a very long and changing history. The first Russian settlement began in 1718. They built a fort near an old Buddhist monastery. This monastery had seven buildings in it. Because of this, the city was named Semipalatinsk. This name means "Seven-Chambered City." The fort used to flood when snow melted. In 1778, people moved the fort to higher ground. Between 1917 and 1920, the city was called Alash-qala.

Some parts of the city's history were very difficult. In 1949, the Soviet Union began testing atomic bombs nearby. They used the steppe land west of the city. They ran the Semipalatinsk Test Site until 1989. During that time, they conducted 456 nuclear tests. Some tests were done in the air. Many others were done deep underground. These tests caused health problems for people in nearby villages. Because of this hard past, the city changed its name to Semey in 2007.

Today, Semey is a famous place for students. It is known for its medical university. This school trains many health specialists for the country. The city has a population of 312,764 people.
