Petropavl began as a military fortress in the summer of 1752. It was named the fortress of Saint Peter. A group of nearly 2,000 soldiers and dragoons moved to the Ishim river. They built a large wooden fortification in a hexagon shape. The fence was more than 1.3 kilometers long. This fort helped protect the borders of the Russian Empire. Later, the city became a major center for trade. It was a place where goods moved between Russia and Central Asia.

Many different groups of people live in the city today. In 2020, the population was about 219,231 people. Most residents are Russian or Kazakh. There are also many Tatars, Ukrainians, and Germans living there. Other groups include Poles, Belarusians, Azerbaijanis, and Armenians. This mix of people makes the city a diverse place to live. The city also has many schools and businesses.

The city uses special symbols to show what it is like. The modern coat of arms is a circle with Kazakh ornaments. It looks like a stylized Scythian shield. The symbol includes a key to show it is a "Northern gate." There is also a sheaf of wheat for farming. An open book represents the high level of education. Finally, a gear shows the city's industry and manufacturing. These symbols tell the story of Petropavl's life.
