The local landscape is defined by water and vegetation. Many lakes and ponds are found near the city. These include Lake Bolshoe Beloe, Lake Pestroye, and Lake Kishtibish. Other nearby bodies of water are Lake Maloe Beloe and Bitter Lake. Within the city itself, you can find small forests. These forests consist mostly of pine plantations and birch trees. The geography provides a mix of riverbanks, plains, and forested areas.

The history of the city began in the summer of 1752. It was founded as a military fortress named Saint Peter. An expedition of nearly 2,000 people moved to the Ishim river tract. This group included Dragoons from the Lutsk regiment and soldiers from the Noteburg and Vologda regiments. They built a wooden fortification in the shape of a regular hexagon. The fortress covered about 2 hectares and had a fence over 1.3 km long. The site used steep ravines and the wide Ishim River as natural barriers.

As time passed, the fortress evolved into a major economic center. The city became a vital point for transit trade between Russia and Central Asia. This growth was influenced by Abylai Khan, which helped the steppe economy develop. In 1807, the location was renamed the city of Petropavlovsk. By the late 19th century, the city was involved in oil production. This oil was sent to many places, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and even England and Germany. The city also hosted large businesses, such as a tannery and a factory for processing intestines.

Today, Petropavl is a diverse city with a population of 219,231 inhabitants. As of early 2020, the ethnic makeup included many different groups. Russians make up 59.28% of the population, totaling 129,970 people. Kazakhs represent 29.99%, with 65,739 people. Other significant groups include Tatars, Ukrainians, and Germans. Smaller groups include Poles, Belarusians, Azerbaijanis, Armenians, Tajiks, and Uzbeks. This variety of people creates a rich social fabric within the region.

The city uses symbols to represent its identity. The modern coat of arms is a stylized Scythian shield in a circular shape. It features a traditional Kazakh ornament around the perimeter. The design includes a Shanyrak, which divides the circle into four parts. Each part represents a key characteristic of the city. A key symbolizes its role as the "Northern gate of Kazakhstan." A sheaf of wheat represents agriculture and processing. An open book symbolizes high culture and education. Finally, a gear represents the city's industry and manufacturing.
